Chapitre 3: Senator R. Clay Davis

For those of you that aren’t addicted to The Wire, you can probably skip down a paragraph or two.  If you’re down with the best show EVER created for television, enjoy Senator Clay’s signature sound bite.   But this total meltdown is classic also.  Man, I really miss Senator Davis, Jimmy McNulty, Omar, Cheese, Prop Joe and the gang.  What were they thinking pulling the plug?  Time to hit iTunes and start at Season 1 again.  That’s the beauty of having a crappy memory.  It’ll be like watching it for the first time.

I spent a good deal of time at the D’Orsay – good call Mom.  Unfortunately, Graham bolted before I got the photos downloaded.  Really amazing stuff there – most memorable were Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, and Gauguin (how can you not love a dude that just moved to French Polynesia?).  The place is huge and I believe was some kind of railway station from the early 1900’s.  My folks introduced me to Toulouse-Lautrec, as they have some of his prints from the 1890’s, but his paintings were the (0)(0).

Before Graham split, we decided to bang out one decadent meal.  We tore up Le Relais Plaza at the Plaza Athenee.  Alain Ducasse required a jacket, and well, you know, I’m not rolling that way, so we “settled” for his other place at the hotel.  The food killed, but more importantly, the 2001 Dugat-Py “Coeur de Roy” was ferocious.   I’m no Burgnut, but this was stellar juice.  It’s why Burgundy is Burgundy and California Pinot is California Pinot.  Definitely the best taste of the trip thus far, albeit it was probably infanticide to drink this so young.  Needles, I think you and I had this one at Cru some time ago.  It showed real well.  Once the medicine took, Graham dragged me over to the Crazy Horse.  Dignified burlesque.  I’ll  leave it at that.

So, the O’s have quickly fallen and the Caps are in the hole.   Clay, help me out here?

Status Report:

Current Events – No TV here really.  I mean, I gave BBC a whirl last night and I guess that was somewhat informative.  The dollar continues to tumble, the Pope acknowledges the Catholic church pedo ‘sitch, and the French are turning on Sarkozy.  I think that’s enough for awhile.  I might suspend this section on future entries.

Literature – Still working on Kitchen Confidential, had no clue Bourdain was such a crackhead.  Definitely explains a lot.

Cell phone:  Still don’t have one.

Back at Mansart for a few days before I take a train South to Bordeaux.  Nice room, large French windows opening up on to Rue de Capucines.  Here’s a shot from the window.

Lastly, big shout out to all the folks for the Taste of the Lower East Side tonight.  Please know I’m certainly thinking of y’all.
